The perfect getaway: thermal baths, beach and town

Caldes d'Estrac is one of those towns you visit in a day and miss for a week. The plan takes care of itself: thermal circuit in the morning, vermouth and fresh fish by the sea, an afternoon stroll and, if you stay over, more unhurried water the next day. All on foot, and car-free if you come on the R1 train from Barcelona.

The thermal baths of Caldes d'Estrac date from the nineteenth century — they are the only publicly owned ones in all of Catalonia — and since Roman times this water has made the town a place of health and rest. This getaway comes with centuries of guarantee.

What to do in Caldes d'Estrac

  • The beach, 150 metres from the balneari. Step out of the warm water and end the day with your feet in the sand: a contrast no inland thermal baths can offer.
  • Fundació Palau, the Maresme's Picasso corner. The museum of the poet Josep Palau i Fabre holds an intimate collection of work by Picasso, his personal friend. First-rate art five minutes from your thermal bath.
  • The Passeig dels Anglesos and the old town. Nineteenth-century summer villas, quiet streets and the sea always in sight: the era when Caldes was Catalonia's capital of rest can still be felt.
  • The gastronomic Maresme. The county is one of the country's great market gardens: strawberries, sweet "floreta" peas, Arenys squid... with over 50 food festivals a year to prove it.
